What is fiber optic technology?
fiber optic technology uses glass threads (fibers) to transmit data and voice. A fiber optic cable consists of a bundle of glass threads, each of which is capable of transmitting messages modulated onto light waves. Coupled with laser technology and state-of-the-art electronics, fiber optic cable can transmit and receive vast amounts of data far in excess of traditional copper cables such as Cat5, Cat6 and Cat7.
Types of fiber optic cables
There are in the main two types of fiber optic cabling, single-mode
and multimode.
single-mode
single-mode fiber cable allows only one mode (or wavelength) of
light to propagate through the fiber. It is capable of higher
bandwidth and greater distances than multimode, and it is often used
long for distance connectivity. This type of fiber uses lasers as
the light-generating method. Its maximum cable length is more than
10 km (32808.4 feet).
multimode
multimode fiber cable allows multiple modes of light to propagate
through the fiber. It is used for workgroup applications and
intra-building applications such as risers. It uses light-emitting
diodes as a light-generating device. The maximum cable length is 2
km (6561.7 feet).
Why use fiber optic?
fiber optic technology is safe, secure and cost-effective. It has
the highest level of reliability and redundancy for transmitting
audio, video and data information. The broad bandwidth provided by
fiber optics makes it the technology of tomorrow.
fiber optics has several advantages over traditional copper cables:
fiber optic cables have a much greater bandwidth than copper cables.
This means that they can carry more information.
fiber optic cables are less susceptible than copper cables to EMI
and EMC interference, allowing you to lay it where you need it,
without having to worry about the proximity to electrical systems.
The transmission distance of copper cabling is 100 meters, compare
this to 10km and 2km for single and multimode fiber optics.
fiber optic cables are much thinner and lighter than copper cables.
Data can be transmitted digitally (the natural form for computer
data) rather than analogically.
Where information security is the prime concern fiber optic is the
only cabling technology guaranteed to be immune from unauthorized
eavesdropping.
TS4B is highly experienced in the provision of fiber optic cable
installation. We offer complete design, installation testing and
commissioning services with national coverage. All fiber
installations are tailored to individual’s current network
requirements with expansion and future proofing built in to the
overall design.
We offer a fiber optic termination and testing service to corporate
end users as well as partnering with other communication providers
who prefer to use our skilled services rather than invest in
expensive test equipment and costly engineer training.
Both methods of termination are offered either direct termination or
fusion splicing of pre manufactured pigtail assemblies.
All fiber testing is carried out with our own calibrated test
equipment with either stabilized light source and power meters (LS+PM)
or high resolution triple window optical time domain reflect meters
(OTDR) for performance checked against standards optical flux
budgets
